Title:
Right Column Layer Workflow and Base Color Tutorial for Inkarnate 2.0
Request:
With Inkarnate 2.0, the layer system has changed significantly, and current tutorials mainly showcase finished maps rather than teaching users how to build a map step by step. A detailed tutorial video is needed to help new and returning users understand how to use the right-hand column effectively.
Layer Workflow:
The right-hand column contains the key layers and tools for creating a map. The intended order of use is bottom-to-top, but some layers behave differently, which can cause confusion for new users. Overall, the layout is self-explanatory, but the following points require clarification in a tutorial.
Default Layers / Panel Items (Top → Bottom in right column menu):
• Add Layer (+) – Adds new layers that can be moved up or down in the stack.
• Objects – Places assets such as buildings, trees, and decorations.
• Grid – Not a true layer, but works with the layers for alignment and placement. Can be toggled on/off. Its placement here is logical because it’s used frequently with layers.
• Land Brush
• Land Shape Mask
• Water Brush
• Base Color – Currently behaves differently from other layers, with limited access and no standard layer controls.
Important Note: Although this list is displayed top-to-bottom in the menu, the intended workflow is bottom-to-top, which can feel counterintuitive at first because most people naturally read lists from top to bottom. Once understood, it makes perfect sense: it works like layering paper—start with the base, then add water, land, land textures, and objects on top, stacking layers logically. Users can add additional layers and relocate them as needed. This concept should be clearly explained in a tutorial to help beginners understand the reasoning behind the order.
Key Tutorial Points:
• Layer Order: Explain the bottom-to-top workflow; clarify why it may feel counterintuitive and reference the “layering paper” analogy.
• Base Color Behavior: Show how to access and modify Base Color consistently with other layers.
• Add Layer (+): Demonstrate how new layers are added and moved, including placing objects below other layers if needed.
• Grid Clarification: Emphasize that Grid is not a true layer but works with layers for alignment and placement.
Outcome:
This tutorial will help users understand the layer workflow, properly use Base Color and other layers, and avoid confusion or mistakes. It will also reduce frustration caused by inconsistent layer behavior, hidden options, and unclear access.
Notes:
This request focuses on the right-hand column. A future tutorial could cover the left-hand tool panel and top option bar once pop-ups and other interface issues are addressed.
I hope this helps you fix the bugs and improve the workflow.
